FOR MARCUS, cuddling was the best. He couldn’t get enough closeness with Ethan. He leaned against Ethan’s chest and got a small thrill with every rise and fall. “I love when you run your fingers through my hair.” Marcus moaned and took a big handful from the bowl of popcorn.

“I wish mine were like this,” Ethan said. “It’s soft and natural. I have to use so much product.”

Marcus twisted his neck and watched Ethan separate strands of his own shellacked hair. He’d seen Ethan fresh out of the shower and witnessed his styling struggles.

“You still want to grow yours long?”

“Yeah. I think so. I want to try, but it’s driving me kind of crazy now. Always in my face.” Marcus picked up a strand and moved it out of Ethan’s eyes.

“Yeah, that’s great. Can you follow me around and hold my hair all day?” Ethan laughed. Marcus left his hand holding Ethan’s hair and used the other to feed Ethan a single piece of popcorn.

“I have a barrette. You want to wear it?

“I can’t wear… you know what? Fuck it. Yes, I would love to try it.”

Marcus popped up from the couch and returned with one. He moved the popcorn bowl to the table, straddled Ethan, brushed his hair back, and secured it with the clip. “There. Better?”

“So much.”

“You know your eyebrows are uneven. You want me to fix them?”

“Shit. I thought I had them straight. It’s harder than it looks.”

“Takes practice. I like mine a little less groomed than yours, but I can even yours out for you.”

“Thanks.”

Marcus retrieved his tweezers from the bathroom and plucked a few strays on Ethan’s brow line. “I’m going to bring the left side in a bit, so it matches the right.”

“Ouch,” Ethan exclaimed, his eyes watering.

“Oh, poor baby.” Marcus kissed the bridge of his brow and drew back to rest his ass on Ethan’s thighs. He looked deeply into Ethan’s eyes, overwhelmed by the connection they’d established—a level of intimacy he’d never experienced before. Grooming Ethan filled Marcus with a warmth and a foreign need. Ethan was aesthetically beautiful, but so were many of the other men he’d dated. Marcus could see the spattering of freckles across Ethan’s forehead. His cheeks were red—a permanent blush that highlighted his bone structure. Marcus cupped Ethan’s touchable skin, and Ethan covered his hand with his own. “You’re beautiful.”

“Thank you. So are you.”

“If I wanted to kiss you for a while, could we do that?”

“You don’t have to ask to kiss me, Marcus.”

Marcus leaned forward and pressed his lips to Ethan’s. He ran his tongue along the seam of Ethan’s lips, seeking entrance. Ethan hesitated. Marcus could feel it. It wasn’t a new dynamic for Marcus. He’d been in the situation often enough to understand that kissing was the opening act for most men, and without the main event to look forward to, many of them couldn’t be bothered. He closed his eyes and waited for Ethan to stop, but he never did. Ethan kissed him
